About Coastal Family Media

Since 2008, Coastal Family Media has been helping individuals, couples, and families across Georgia and North Carolina build stronger, healthier relationships without leaving home.

Build A Shared Language That Makes Miscommunication Nearly Impossible…So Your Relationship Gets Easier Every Year… Instead Of Harder

We're a 100% virtual practice that specializes in working with high-achieving couples in their foundation years (Years 1-5) who refuse to wing it.

Unlike traditional “talk therapy,” we don’t just help you process your feelings.

Not borrowed from someone else’s marriage.

Not pulled from a generic script.

A shared language only the two of you understand.

Inside jokes. Shorthand phrases. Emotional codes that make you feel like a team of two against the world.

The kind of communication system that prevents the same three fights from happening over and over again.

We work with folks who optimize everything else in their lives—their careers, their health, their finances—and who want the same level of intentionality in their relationships.

If that sounds like you, you’re in the right place.

Our Approach & Your Journey

At Coastal Family Media, we believe in a collaborative and client-centered approach, recognizing that every couple’s journey is unique.

But here’s where we’re different:

We don’t hand you generic scripts and hope they work.

We don’t assume you and your partner already speak the same language.

And we don’t wait until you’re in crisis mode to start building.

Instead, our experienced therapists work alongside you to create personalized communication protocols tailored to YOUR relationship.

Based on YOUR triggers.

YOUR love languages.

YOUR communication DNA.

WHY we do what we do...

A Letter From Dr. Eric Williams, Founder

Hey, I’m Dr. Eric Williams.

And I need to tell you something most therapists would never admit:

For years, I was watching my own clients struggle with the same problems over and over… and I couldn’t figure out why traditional therapy wasn’t working.

Let me explain.

Who We Help (And Who We DON’T Help)

We're the right fit for you if:

We're NOT the right fit if:

If you’re in the first group—welcome.

If you’re in the second group—this isn’t for you, and that’s okay.

But before we go any further, let me tell you the story behind WHY we do what we do…

And why I believe traditional therapy has been failing couples for years.

The Pattern I Couldn't Ignore

About six years ago, I started noticing something disturbing in my practice here at Coastal Family Media.

Couples would come in. Smart people. Motivated. Successful in literally every other area of their lives.

We’d work together for months.

They’d leave with communication tools, conflict resolution strategies, and worksheets on “active listening.”

They’d feel hopeful. Optimistic. Ready to finally fix things.

And then six months later… they’d come back.

Still stuck.

Still having the same three fights about money, sex, and whose family they’re visiting for the holidays.

Still feeling like roommates who occasionally have sex instead of actual partners.

One couple, high-achievers in their third year of marriage

Said something that hit me like a punch to the gut:

“We know HOW to communicate, Dr. Williams. We’ve read all the books. Taken the courses. But when we’re actually stressed or triggered, none of it works. It’s like we’re speaking two completely different languages… and there’s no translator.”

I heard that exact phrase—”two different languages”—three times in one month.

From three different couples.

All smart. All committed. All doing the “right” things.

And all still stuck in the same exhausting patterns.

That's when it hit me:

The problem wasn’t that they didn’t know how to communicate.

The problem was they were trying to build a unified “WE” on top of two completely unexamined “ME”s.

It’s like trying to run Windows and Mac on the same computer at the same time…

And wondering why everything keeps crashing.

The Discovery That Changed Everything

I went digging.

And I found a 2018 study from the Gottman Institute that tracked 130 newlywed couples over six years.

The findings were shocking:

67% of recurring conflicts in marriage are perpetual.

Meaning they NEVER get resolved.

Not in Year 3. Not in Year 10. Not ever.

But here’s what blew my mind:

The couples who stayed happily married weren’t the ones who magically “solved” these conflicts.

They were the ones who built what researchers called “Relationship-Specific Language.”

A shared emotional vocabulary that let them navigate conflict without destroying intimacy.

They didn’t fix the problem.

They just learned how to talk about it without bleeding out emotionally every time it came up.

That's when I realized: It was the ONE variable that predicted marital satisfaction

Better than income, sex frequency, or even love languages.

But when I looked around at marriage advice, no one was teaching couples how to BUILD this language.

Everyone was teaching generic scripts (“Use I-statements!”) instead of helping couples create their OWN custom communication system.

And that’s when it hit me:

You can’t create a unified “WE” on top of two unexamined “ME”s.

When you walk into your relationship, you bring:

Your family's communication blueprint (the rules you absorbed from watching your parents fight, avoid, or resolve conflict)

Your hidden expectations (the unspoken "shoulds" you've never voiced: "They should know I'm stressed," "They should help without being asked")

Your Love Language (how YOU naturally show love—which may be the exact opposite of how your partner receives it)

Your Apology Language (what makes YOU feel like repair happened—which your partner might be completely missing)

Your partner walks in with their own versions of all four.

And then you both try to “wing it and hope.”

Here's the problem:

You expect them to speak your Love Language without ever telling them what it is.

You expect them to know your hidden needs without ever making them visible.

You expect them to apologize the way YOU need without ever teaching them how.

You expect them to fight fair using rules you inherited from your family—rules they’ve never seen.

And when they don’t meet those invisible, uncommunicated, unconscious expectations?

And you're expecting your partner to:You resent them for failing a test they didn't know they were taking.

That resentment calcifies.

Emotional scar tissue builds.

Connection erodes.

And 5 years later, you’re roommates who occasionally argue and have sex.

But here’s what nobody tells you:

The problem isn’t that you don’t know HOW to communicate.

The problem is you’ve never built a SHARED LANGUAGE.

Let's get specific.

Most couples operate on assumed shared meaning.

They use the same words but mean completely different things based on family of origin, past relationships, and personal wiring.

This creates a communication gap that compounds over time:

  • Partner A says “I’m fine” (meaning: “I’m genuinely okay”)
  • Partner B hears “I’m fine” (interpreting: “I’m upset but shutting down”)
  • Result: Partner B pursues, Partner A feels smothered, resentment calcifies

Multiply this by 100+ common words/phrases over 5-10 years?

You get emotional scar tissue that makes divorce feel inevitable.

Every time you expect your partner to “just know” what you need and they don’t?

You’re racking up “expectation debt.”

And by Year 3, the interest is so high, even small mistakes feel unforgivable.

That’s when I knew:

The real problem isn’t poor communication skills.

It’s that you’re trying to run two completely different operating systems on the same computer—and wondering why everything keeps crashing.

You have to build a Shared Language from scratchBut Here’s The TRUTH:

Not borrowed from someone else’s marriage.

Not pulled from a generic script.

A language only the two of you understand.

Inside jokes. Shorthand phrases. Emotional codes that make you feel like a team of two against the world.

And that became the foundation for everything we do at Coastal Family Media today.

Why We Do This Work

Since 2008, Coastal Family Media has been serving individuals, couples, and families who refuse to wing it.

Folks who are tired of repeating the same patterns.

Folks who want to build something that actually works.

We don’t do traditional “talk therapy” anymore.

Instead, we work with high-achieving couples in their foundation years (1-5) who want to install a custom communication operating system BEFORE emotional scar tissue forms.

Because here’s what nearly 20 years of clinical experience has taught me:

You can either build a shared language NOW… or spend the next 20 years arguing about the same things in different words.

Most couples wait until Year 7, Year 10, Year 15 to get help.

By then, they’re not just dealing with communication problems.

They’re dealing with years of resentment, contempt, and emotional debt.

Our clients refuse to wait that long.

They’re the kind of people who optimize everything else in their lives—their careers, their health, their finances.

And they want the same level of intentionality in their marriage.

That’s who we serve.

And if that sounds like you, keep reading.

What Our Clients Say

We don’t share client names due to HIPAA, but here’s what some of them have written:

Dr. Williams, we greatly appreciate your help and are very grateful to have your support. After our session, we took some time to talk more about what we learned. We really appreciate the guidance you shared and have printed it out. Thank you for giving us homework!

Thank you so much for the session today. It was extremely helpful. Thank you for this email summary. We really appreciate the guidance that you shared and have printed it out. We will read it again and follow your suggestions.

I always walk away feeling empowered. I appreciate you for making me feel seen, heard, and holding a space for me to be vulnerable. Thank you again for being the GOAT. You’re making a difference in me for sure.

I know it’s been a rollercoaster of ups and downs in my relationship with my husband. I appreciate you hanging in there, advocating for me to use my voice more and to show me I can still be myself along with the many roles I have in life and not feel silly doing so.

Spouse and I were just chatting and we think we can cancel the appointment that we have scheduled for this Friday. Nothing is wrong—everything is great actually—we’re in the same good place that we were during our last session. There just doesn’t feel like we have any issues that we need to work through at the moment (which is amazing!).

How Coastal Family Media Is Different

This Isn’t About “FIXING” Your Relationship.

This is About Installing the Operating System You Should’ve Had From Day ONE

Here’s a Fatal Flaw in Traditional Marriage Advice

Traditional marriage advice operates on a “WE-first” philosophy.

It assumes you’re already a “WE.”

It assumes you both speak the same language.

It assumes you define words like “respect,” “support,” “clean,” and “soon” the exact same way.

And then it hands you generic scripts like “Use I-statements” or “Don’t go to bed angry” and expects them to magically work.

But here’s what actually happens:

You try the script.

It doesn’t fit.

Your partner doesn’t respond the way the book said they would.

You feel like you’re doing it “wrong.”

And you end up MORE frustrated than when you started.

And that’s because:

You can't build a unified "WE" on top of two completely unexamined "ME"s.

It’s like trying to merge two companies without first understanding how each one operates.

You don’t know their systems.

You don’t know their processes.

You don’t know what “efficiency” means to Company A vs. Company B.

So when you try to “merge,” everything crashes.

Because you’re running two different operating systems and wondering why nothing syncs.

The “ME TO WE” Framework flips this entire approach on its head.

Instead of starting with the “WE” and hoping you figure out the “ME” along the way…

We start with the ME.

We dig into:

How YOU were raised to communicate (or not communicate)

What YOUR family taught you about conflict (fight? flee? freeze?)

What YOUR triggers are (and where they come from)

What YOUR definitions are for words like “clean,” “soon,” “support,” and “respect”

Because here’s the brutal truth:

You don’t even know your OWN communication DNA yet.

You’ve been operating on autopilot for 25-35 years.

Repeating patterns you learned before you were even aware you were learning them.

And now you’re married to someone who has THEIR OWN autopilot patterns…

And until you understand YOUR system and THEIR system…

And until you build a SHARED system from scratch…

You’re going to keep crashing.

The ME TO WE Framework gives you the blueprint to stop crashing.

To stop repeating the same fights.

To stop feeling like roommates.

To stop winging it and start building.

This Is The Only System Designed For High-Achievers In Their First 5 Years of Relationship

Not generic marriage advice for “everyone.”

Not crisis counseling for couples on the brink.

This is a prevention investment for couples in optimization mode.

This is for builders, not fixers.

This is for early adopters, not last-ditch efforts.

This is for couples who refuse to wing it.

Because you don’t wing it at work.

You don’t wing it with your health.

You don’t wing it with your money.

And you’re not going to wing it with the most important partnership of your life.

OLD WAY vs. NEW WAY

OLD WAY (Traditional Relationship Advice):

NEW WAY (Coastal Family Media's ME TO WE Framework):

Here's Why It Works for High-Achieving Couples in The First 5 Years Of Dating, Engagement, Or Marriage

Designed Specifically For High-Achievers In Years 1-5 Of Their Relationship

Finally Feel Seen, Heard & Understood By Your Partner In 30 Days Or Less

It’s Preventive, Not Reactive

You’re not waiting until resentment has calcified into contempt. You’re installing the framework BEFORE the crashes happen—like getting the best insurance policy before you need it.

It’s Personalized to YOUR Relationship

You’re not memorizing scripts or following templates. You’re building custom definitions, boundaries, and protocols based on YOUR triggers, YOUR love languages, and YOUR communication DNA.

It’s Sequential And Systematic

You can’t skip steps. Each phase builds on the last. Phase 1 (The ME Foundation) must be completed before Phase 2 (The WE Integration). No shortcuts. No winging it.

It’s Measurable

You’ll have before/after proof in your own handwriting by Day 30. You’ll see the shift in how you communicate, how fast you repair, and how connected you feel—tracked in real-time.

It Works Even If Only One Partner Starts

Because when YOU change how you show up, the relationship dynamic shifts. Your partner will notice. They’ll see you staying calmer during conflict, asking better questions, understanding them in ways you never did before. And then they’ll want in. (70% of skeptical partners join by Week 2-3.)

What You Can Expect If You Work With Us

If you’re accepted into our coaching program, here’s what happens:

  • We build YOUR custom Shared Language Framework from scratch (not a template—YOUR language)
  • You get weekly 1-on-1 coaching sessions where we troubleshoot your specific communication breakdowns in real-time
  • You get email summaries after every session (our clients tell us they print these out and re-read them—they’re that valuable)
  • You get “homework” assignments that are actually FUN to do with your spouse (not boring worksheets)
  • And you get a communication system that lasts for the next 50 years

This isn’t crisis intervention.

This isn’t damage control.

This is optimization mode.

You’re in Year 1-5—the foundation years.

Install the framework NOW, and the next 50 years compound exponentially.

Every month you wait = more emotional scar tissue to undo later.

Who I Am (And Why I’m Qualified To Help You)

I’m Dr. Eric Williams.

I’m a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LCMHCS) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).

I hold a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Regent University.

I’m verified by Psychology Today.

I’m credentialed with every major insurance provider.

I’m a Board Certified Telemental Health Provider and an Approved Clinical Supervisor.

And I’ve spent nearly 20 years in the trenches with real couples facing real problems.

Since 2008, my practice—Coastal Family Services—has been serving individuals, couples, and families who are tired of winging it.

  • I’ve worked with military families trying to hold it together through deployment after deployment.
  • High-achieving professionals who are crushing it at work but completely failing at home.
  • Couples from around the world—minorities of various ethnic groups, individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community, and families affected by developmental disabilities.
  • And couples who were literally one fight away from calling a divorce lawyer

I’ve helped them turn it around..

But here's what really matters:

I'm not just speaking from clinical experience.

I’m a husband.

A father of identical twin boys with severe autism.

A son. A brother. A Christian. A U.S. Army veteran who served on active duty from 2001 to 2006.

I’m originally from Albany, GA.

And I’m an avid football and basketball fan of any college or professional team from the state of Georgia.

I bleed red and black.

I know what it’s like to be stretched thin.

To have a career you care about.

Kids who need you.

And a partner who deserves better than the exhausted, irritable version of you that shows up at the end of the day.

I know what it's like to balance ambition with connection.

To navigate extreme stress without taking it out on your partner.

To build a family while maintaining your identity.

I know what it’s like to feel like you’re succeeding everywhere EXCEPT the place that matters most.

I’ve lived it.

I’ve worked through it.

And I’ve helped thousands of couples do the same.

Our Commitment to Community Giving

At Coastal Family Media, we believe sharing is caring.

That’s why we donate a portion of our monthly revenue to:

I have identical twin boys diagnosed with severe autism.

And it’s my mission to make sure vulnerable populations around the world have funding for the resources they need to support themselves and their families.

Every session is an opportunity to help a family of a vulnerable child or adult.

When you invest in working with us, you’re not just improving your relationship.

You’re supporting vulnerable families around the world who need it most.

Why You Need To Act Now

Here’s the brutal truth most couples discover too late:

Every month you wait = more resentment calcifying.

Years 1-5 aren’t just “early years.”

They’re FORMATIVE years that set the pattern for the next 50.

The communication habits you’re building right now—good or bad—are becoming your default operating system.

If you’re walking on eggshells around money, sex, and in-laws NOW…

If you’re replaying fights in your head during important meetings NOW…

If you’re starting to feel more like roommates than partners NOW…

That pattern doesn’t just “go away” on its own.

It compounds.

Research shows that couples wait an average of 6 years of being unhappy before seeking help.

By that point, the relationship has deteriorated so much that recovery is exponentially harder.

You don’t have 6 years to waste.

You don’t have 10 years to figure this out through trial and error.

You’re high-achievers who are FAILING at the one thing that matters most.

That identity threat alone should be enough to make you act.

Plus:

  • Your friends are figuring this out—why are YOU still stuck?
  • You want kids soon—you need to fix this FIRST
  • You don’t want to look back at 40 and realize you wasted your 30s in a mediocre marriage

The best time to invest in your relationship was 6 months ago.

The second-best time is today.

FAQ: Your Biggest Questions, Answered

Your partner doesn’t have to believe in this yet.
In fact, most couples who complete this framework started with one skeptical partner.
Here’s the thing about relationships:
They’re a system.
And in any system, when one variable changes, the entire system must recalibrate.
Think about it:

You’re not changing your partner.
You’re changing the dance.
And they have two choices:

  1. Keep dancing the old way (which no longer works because you’re not playing your old part)
  2. Learn the new steps (because the new dance actually feels better)

Most partners choose #2.
Not immediately. Not on Day 1.
But by Week 2, when their skeptical partner notices:

  • You’re not picking the same fight anymore
  • You’re not shutting down when they’re stressed
  • You’re asking “What do you need?” instead of assuming
  • You’re actually easier to be around

They get curious.
And that’s when you say:
“I’ve been working through something that’s helping me show up better. Want to try one exercise with me?”
What This Means For You Right Now:
If you’re reading this and thinking:
“This is exactly what we need, but my partner will never agree to this…”
Good news: You don’t need their permission to start.
Do Phase 1 alone.
Learn your communication DNA.
Start showing up differently.
And when they notice the shift (and they will), you say:

“I’ve been learning how we each communicate differently based on how we were raised. Want to hear what I figured out about us?”

You’re not selling them on a workbook.
You’re inviting them into your discovery.
And curiosity is a stronger motivator than guilt ever was.
The Real Question:
The question isn’t: “Will my partner do this with me?”
The question is: “Am I willing to show up differently—even if they’re not ready yet?”
Because here’s the truth:
If you’re waiting for your partner to “get on board” before you start building…
You’re still winging it.
And you already know where that leads.

You have time for what you prioritize.
You find 15 minutes for social media.
You find 15 minutes for Netflix.
You find 15 minutes to scroll Reddit or check your fantasy football lineup.
This is 15 minutes that prevents 3-hour fights and years of resentment.
The Daily Check-In takes 5-7 minutes.
That’s less time than it takes to make coffee.
And it saves you HOURS of replaying arguments in your head during work meetings.

The best time to build this was Year 1.
The second-best time is today.
The framework works in Year 1 or Year 10—but the ROI is highest when you build early.
If you’re in Year 7, Year 10, or Year 15… you can still do this.
But you’ll be spending time UN-learning bad patterns before you can install the new ones.
That’s why we focus on Years 1-5.
Because prevention is easier than repair.

Most programs give you generic advice.
This gives you a personalized operating system.
Most programs are reactive (applied after crisis).
This is preventive (applied during foundation years).
Most programs teach scripts.
This teaches you to build YOUR OWN language.

If you’re in Years 1-5 and you’re both still willing to try, you’re not too far gone.
The couples who are “too far gone” are the ones who waited until Year 15 when resentment had already turned to contempt.
You’re still in the optimal window.

Our coaching community is 100% virtual and open to couples anywhere in the world.
(Our practice is limited to NC/GA due to licensing, but coaching has no geographic restrictions.)
